CarbonMonoxide (CO)
This deadly gas comes from cars, furnaces, fireplaces and stoves. I can make you very sick or even be fatal.
* Put carbon monoxide alarms near each sleeping area and on each floor of your home. (they are fairly inexpensive now - at places like Wal-Mart).
* If you smell gas or if an alarm goes off, open the doors and windows, and get out of the building right away and call 911.
* Do not touch a light switch, pick up a telephone or make any electrical connection that could creat a spark. If you need light, use a flashlight.
* Report the leak to your gas company or your gas supplier from a neighbor's telephone or from a cellphone when you are outside.
* Turn off any appliance or heater that smells funny, starts sooting or has a different looking flame.
* Keep anything made of wood, paper and cloth away from heating appliances.
* Never use charcoal grills inside your house.
* Never warm up a vehicle inside the garage.
* Make sure chimneys are clean and working properly.
* Don't use unvented kerosene or gas heaters or a vent-free gas fireplace while sleeping.
* Never use the kitchen stove or oven to heat your home.
* Always turn on the kitchen exhaust fan when using the oven. (I don't have a fan, but I do have a window right above our oven, and I always open it some when I use the stovetop or the oven. Even in the winter, I will crack it open and always let fresh air in)
love, dee
