What you should do
Emergency Treatment if Victim stops breating;
1. Ask person, "Are you okay?"
a. If person doesn't answer, yell, "Help!" to get somebody to call 911 or operator (0) or EMS.
b. If you don't think there is a head, back or neck injury, place the person so that you can check for breating.
c. Lay the person flat on a firm surface and gently tilt the head back to open airway.
2. Kneel by person's side next to the person's neck and shoulders.
a. Gently raise chin, and tilt head back.
3. If you think there might be a head, back or neck injury, don't tilt or move person's body or head.
4. Check for breathing. Place your cheek near person's mouth. See if chest rises and falls. Listen for any sounds of breathing. Feel for air on on your cheek and ear.
5. If you have a breathing mask available, place it on the person's face and use as directed.
6. If no mask is available, pinch person's nose closed with your fingers. Place your mouth over person's mouth, making a leak-proof seal. Watch and use caution to avoid saliva if the person is not known to you.
7. Take a deep breath.
a. Breathe into person's mouth, slowly giving two full breaths. Each breath you give should be for at least 1 to 1 1/2 seconds.
b. Allow for person's natural breathing in between. After each breath, pull your mouth away and take a deep breath yourself. Let air escape from the person's mouth. Stop breathing into person's mouth if you see chest rising.
8. If there's no sign of breathing, gently move person's head. Bend his neck back farther.
a. Lift the chin higher. Try again.
9. Check person's breathing.
a. See if his chest rises and falls or if he coughs.
10. Check both sides of throat for pulse.
11. If person is still unconscious, keep giving a breath every four seconds, until help arrives.
12. If person's chest doesn't rise, check for airway blockage. (see next post)
