What You Should Do
1. Place the victim on his or her back.
a. Support the neck while moving him onto position. Don't move victim if you think the head, neck or back may be injured.
2. Lift the neck and tilt the forehead backward.
a. Then lift the chin upward. This lifts the tongue away from the back of the throat and helps to enlarge the airway. Don't lift or bend the neck if you think it might be hurt by being moved.
3. Push the chin upward without moving the neck.
a. Listen for breathing by placing your ear near the mouth. At the same time, watch the chest for signs or movement.
4. If the victim is breathing, roll him carefully onto his side. Don't move person if you think their head, neck or back may be injured.
5. If there is no sign of breathing or breathing isn't strong enough, open the mouth and pass your finger beyond tongue to remove any foreign material like fase teeth, food or vomit.
What you should NOT do
DON'T move victim if you think their head, neck or back may be injured.
DON'T stop assist breathing for more than 15 seconds, until the person is breathing on their own.
