We should always prepare for a disaster before it happens. Your family will then be better able to handle the emergency, even if help is slow getting to you.
Plan and think safety by preparing for tomorrow
* Obtain hazard specific homowners insurance to cover your contents and structure or renters insurance to cover your contents.
* Maintain a battery operated radio and a NOAA Weather radio.
* Prepare a family disaster supplies kit and keep it current and handy.
*Develop a family evacuation plan and practice it once a year.
* Pay attention to all emergency warnings - follow directions and evacuate your residence when advised to do so.
Plan how your family will stay in contact if separated
* Pick two meeting places:
1. A location which is a safe distance from your home in case of fire.
2. A place outside your neighborhood or immediate area in case you can't return home. Arrange for an out-of-state friend to be a "check-in-contact" for everyone to call.
Do all this NOW:
* Post emergency telephone numbers by every phone in the house and on the refrigerator door, if you use it as the family bulletin board.
* Put emergency numbers on all speed dialers, including cell phones.
* Fill out and discuss the charts on the inside covers of this book.
* Show everyone how to and when to shut off water, gas and electricity at main switches.
* Install a smoke detector on each floor of your home, especially near bedrooms, but not in kitchen, where they'll be triggered every time you broil a hamburger.
Test them monthly and change the batteries twic a year, when you move clocks back or forward.
Think and plan for safety
* Check outside and around your house, manufactured (mobile) home or apartment.
*Is it away from a river/creek or other water source that may flood?
to be continued
