Well, we have been advised here in Jersey, that we may endure a pretty hard hurricane season. They expect possibly five bad ones to hit our shores on the East Coast.
They also advised that the government cannot be relied upon in case of a devastating event. Look at FEMA and hurrican Katrina and the results of which are still unsolved.
They advised that those of us with children, should be making allowances so that we won't have to stand in any long lines waiting for water, etc. To prepare to do without services for up to two weeks - so in order to prevent shortages and panic, folks should be stocking up on items such as toiletries, and water, medicines, first aid kits, dried goods, canned goods, etc. If you loose your ability to cook/ and to refridgerate - you should have alternative methods to prepare food - You may not have refridgeration or a freezer - but you can survive without it if you use other things to sustain you and your family.
Have a cooking stove you use when camping - have plenty of water stored for drinking, and for washing up - make sure you have enough water also to flush your toilet if you suddenly have no water - have the wipes they sell to wash yourself as well.
Theres all kinds of things you can do to prepare - make sure you have plenty of flashlights, batteries, radio, candles, matches. All the things you might not think about.
What I do is picture that the disaster has already happened; now what do we need to survive until things get back to some semblance of order?? And go from there.
Don't purchase things you know you won't eat or use. That will just be a waste of time and money.
You can obtain a lot of things from the Dollar Store too - like batteries and emergency candles - So you don't have to really spend much. And the things you buy, you can always use even if there is no disaster - its just better to be safe than sorry. If everyone just sat back and waited until disaster hit - then you will have huge shortages, and huge lines - who needs that aggravation?! Its best to be prepared and be able to stay at home -
Have things for the younger kids to do as well. Crafts, coloring, CD's to listen to, etc. Just something to help pass the time if you loose your electric for a time.
Well, I hope this helps - please add any suggestions to this post as well. It will be greatly appreciated guys.
